Preserving the Dialects of Greater Bengal, One Recording at a Time

Archivists and grandmothers are teaming up to record the words, songs and sayings that standard Bengali leaves behind.

Heritage desk · 06 Sept 2026

Every family carries words that never made it into textbooks — village terms for weather, work, food and feeling.

A volunteer archiving project is recording elders speaking naturally: stories, jokes, lullabies and everyday conversation.

The story so far

The recordings are transcribed, translated and stored openly so schools and researchers can use them freely.

The team welcomes new contributors. A phone recording and a consent form are enough to begin.
