Every Saturday morning, church halls and community centres fill with the sound of children sounding out the Bengali alphabet.
The teachers are volunteers — parents, grandparents, former pupils — who give their weekends so the language survives the crossing of generations.

Classes mix reading and writing with songs, stories and festival preparations, so the language is lived, not just learned.
Organisers say they always need more helpers. Anyone who can read a page aloud is already qualified to start.
