Background
HealthFirst NHS Trust required a full-scale portable appliance testing programme across five hospital sites to maintain regulatory compliance and ensure patient and staff safety.
Objective
Test and certify all portable electrical appliances across 12 wards and departments within a six-month timeframe with minimal disruption to hospital operations.
Challenge
Coordinating testing around 24/7 hospital operations, categorising thousands of appliances by risk level, and maintaining detailed compliance records for NHS auditing.
Solution
We deployed four certified PAT engineers working in rotating shifts, using asset management software to track every appliance, and scheduling testing during low-traffic periods.
Outcome
Achieved 100% compliance across all five sites, reduced previous non-conformance rate from 8% to under 0.5%, and established an ongoing annual maintenance schedule.
